PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The Parkrose High School student accused of bringing a loaded shotgun into school on May 17 was back in court Wednesday morning for an arraignment hearing.
A grand jury indicted Angel Granados-Diaz, 19, on four charges, including two counts of being in possession a gun in a public building, recklessly endangering and possession of a loaded firearm in a public place.
Granados-Diaz’s lawyer pleaded not guilty on his behalf Wednesday. His next court appearance is July 9.
Court documents allege that the teen unlawfully and intentionally had a loaded gun while inside the high school. It’s also alleged he tried to fire the gun inside the school. Police reports described the incident as a suicide attempt.
“It is fair to say that some depression and mental health issues played a role in this incident,” defense attorney Adam Thayn said.
Students said they saw Granados-Diaz appear with a shotgun inside their classroom, but he was tackled by football coach Keanon Lowe. No one was injured.
