PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The stepson of Nancy Brophy, the romance/mystery writer accused of killing her chef husband at the Oregon Culinary Institute, has sued her for $1.7 million.
Nathan Stillwater’s attorney, Christine Mascal, filed the lawsuit in Multnomah County on Tuesday.
The 2-page filing notes Stillwater is the representative for the estate of his father, Daniel Brophy. Brophy was shot multiple times at OCI and died June 2, 2018.
His stepmother was indicted and charged with murder on September 14. Since that time, her attorneys successfully managed to keep the jail visitor logs and probable cause documents related to her case sealed for another few months.
Nancy Brophy is still in custody and her bail hearing was pushed back to April 19. At that time, the judge said he plans to unseal the information.
Stillwater’s lawsuit states that since his father is dead — and his stepmother is accused of killing him — he is “entitled to recover” a total of $1.7 million to cover pain, suffering, pecuniary loss and loss of companionship.
The lawsuit demands a jury trial.
In 2011, Nancy Brophy wrote an essay titled “How to Murder Your Husband.”
“As a romantic suspense writer, I spent a lot of time thinking about murder and, consequently, about police procedure,” Nancy Brophy wrote in that essay and listed 5 motives: financial, lying, infidelity, abuser and “It’s your profession.”
