PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The Board of Trustees at Portland State University approved an 11% increase in tuition for in-state students on Monday.
The board voted 6 to 3 to raise fees and tuition from $9,105 to $10,050 starting in fall 2019.
The tuition raise is something the Board’s Finance and Administration Committee already approved on Friday. They also voted to consider cutting about $10 million from its academic and student support budgets.
Currently, tuition for 12 credits for an undergraduate is $2,052 each term for residents and $6,840 for non-residents.
According to officials, the potential tuition raise and budgets cuts are necessary unless state lawmakers set aside more funding for higher education.
The vote will take place sometime Monday afternoon, but it doesn’t necessarily mean next year’s rate will be set in stone.
The tuition hike is tentative. The legislature is still making final decisions on education funding. More money could mean a smaller tuition increase.
The Oregon State University board last month voted to raise tuition just over 4% for resident students. The University of Oregon has not yet decided their tuition increase for the next school year.
The decision will go to Oregon’s Higher Education Coordinating Commission, which is in charge of approving any public university tuition increase of more than 5%.
