PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The 64-year-old man who died trying to save his neighbor’s property from the Substation Fire has been identified as The Dalles resident John Ruby.

Ruby was attempting to create a fire line with his tractor when he died as a result of exposure to the fire.

Gene Arnold, a longtime friend and neighbor, said Ruby was the kind of man who would do anything for his friends.

“John was a great guy. He was salt of the Earth,” Arnold said. “Anytime I needed anything I could always count on John Ruby.”

Ruby loved farming and being outside, working with his hands, according to Arnold.

“He was just helping out, doing what he could to save structures in the fire” Arnold said. “In harm’s way. I’m devastated.”

Arnold said he hopes Ruby’s wife, Melody, stays in the neighborhood.

“I hope she stays and I’m going to extend a hand whenever I can to her,” Arnold said.

The Ruby family released a statement to KOIN 6 News saying:

The Ruby family would like to thank everyone for their love, support and concern, however, we request privacy at this time. As we deal with this tragic loss, please do not contact additional friends and relatives. We are all still actively working to keep our friends and neighbors safe.”

The family also added that they set up a donation fund at Columbia Bank. Supporters can make checks to Kylee VanOrman Ruby or Cynthia Kortge with the description “VanOrman Ruby Fire Fund” and send them to the local branch — 316 E. 3rd St, The Dalles, OR 97058.
