PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Officials are now saying that the small dog attacked last week in the Powellhurst area was likely attacked by a coyote, not a cougar.

Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife were able to examine Sophia, who was attacked July 12 around 3 a.m. in her backyard on SE 118th Ave. At the time, police suspected a cougar because there had been sightings of a cougar in the area and Sophia’s owner thought that’s what she saw.

Sophia suffered two puncture wounds and was taken to a vet. She was back home later that morning and expected to make a recovery.

ODFW officials say the bite marks on her indicate a coyote, not a cougar.
