PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Shots rang out late Friday night in a North Portland park, leaving one man dead and the gunman being sought.
The shooting was reported around 11:15 p.m. near McCoy Park at North Fessenden and Newman, police said.
Josh, who lives nearby and asked that his last name not be used, said he was laying in bed and going to sleep when the gunfire rang out.
“I heard pop pop, pop pop pop,” he told KOIN 6 News. “Then I was like, that sounded like gunshots.”
Josh said he heard around 10 shots. Other neighbors estimated there may have been more. Several neighbors reported hearing tires or brakes screeching before and after the shots were fired and cars driving out of the area.
When police arrived they found the man already dead in McCoy Park.
Josh said neighbors saw the victim near a tree. “They said that the cops found the guy laying against the tree,” he said.
The victim was later identified as 32-year-old Alexander Bowers. No arrests have been reported. No information has been released on the circumstances leading up to Bowers’ death.
PPB’s Homicide Unit is currently investigating and authorities have asked anyone with information to contact Detective Brad Clifton at 503.823.0696 or Detective Michael Greenlee at 503.823.0871.
Another neighbor a couple blocks away from McCoy Park said he heard gunshots regularly in the area. Everyone who spoke with KOIN 6 News agrees gun violence city-wide has been skyrocketing and feels like an everyday occurrence now.
“It’s been happening so much lately,” Josh said.
While neighbors spoke at the McCoy Park shooting, another shooting was reported near SE 84th and Lincoln Saturday afternoon. One bullet hit a house and went through the dining room window of a nearby home, which left a hole in the glass and the dining room wall.
Nobody was in the room at that time.
A couple who lives in a different home on the block — and asked not to appear on-camera — said they hit the floor when the shots rang out. They told KOIN 6 News they heard at least 12 shots and said as many as 3 cars may have been involved. Those cars sped off at the time of the shooting.
No injuries were reported in this shooting and, at this time, no suspects are in custody.
