PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Neighbors were shocked to see a family who kept to themselves draw a major police presence Thursday night.
Michael Stuart Ross, 40, is behind bars after he allegedly attacked his brother and killed his mother.
Tualatin police said officers responded to the report of an assault at a house on SW Shawnee Trail just before 11 p.m. Thursday. Officers arrived to find a 73-year-old woman dead and a 47-year-old man with serious injuries.
One neighbor said the victim was able to get out of the house and ran next door to call 911.
“I heard police radio traffic out here in the street,” neighbor Bob Peterson said. “I didn’t interest me enough to get out and take a look.”
But with the crime scene tape covering the street and bloody hand print on the door, Peterson knew something happened.
The injured man later told KOIN 6 News it was his brother who attacked him and killed their mother.
Ross was taken to the Washington County Jail and charged with murder and attempted murder.

Dennis has lived here on SW Shawnee Trail for 25 years, describing the neighborhood as quiet and calm. He doesn’t know much about those who lived at the home where investigators are and says he never saw anything unusual there #KOIN6News pic.twitter.com/Vr8VB1m6I5— Cole Miller (@ColeKOIN) May 11, 2018
