PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Two pedestrians died after being hit by drivers in separate crashes over the weekend on I-5 S near Salem, the Oregon State Police said.

On Saturday, a man ran across the north- and southbound lanes of I-5 and was hit by a semi-truck driver near milepost 234 outside Albany.

Police responded to the report of a pedestrian being hit just after 7 p.m. Saturday. OSP said 39-year-old Daniel Montoya was seen laying down on the north side of the road and then began running across the highway.

As he crossed into the southbound lanes, Montoya ran in front of a car that swerved and managed to miss him, police said. Alan Steven, a 26-year-old semi-truck driver from British Columbia, Canada, was driving behind that car and “could not avoid colliding head-on” with Montoya, OSP said.

Authorities said Montoya was pronounced dead at the scene. Southbound lanes of I-5 S were closed in the area during the investigation.

And on Friday night, a Lebanon woman died after being hit by a driver after she got out of a parked car on a highway in Salem, police said.

Troopers responded to a report of a crash involving a pedestrian around 9:18 p.m. on I-5 S near milepost 254 in Salem.

According to OSP, 26-year-old Christina Klug exited her boyfriend’s car which was parked on the median of the highway. She then walked into one of the southbound lanes where she was hit by 24-year-old Maria Guzman-Coria, police said.

Klug was pronounced dead, police said, and Guzman-Coria remained at the scene, cooperating with authorities.

That investigation is still underway, OSP said.

The Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office said it seemed that the heavy rainfall was contributing to the number of crashes.

Oregon Department of Transportation spokesperson Don Hamilton said it is important to mind your safety on the road. 

“There are many factors that are going on right now. Certainly, it’s getting darker earlier, certainly we’re getting a lot of rain, we’ll continue to see some rain in the days ahead. There’s a lot of elements in this. It’s really all about making sure that when we are driving on the road we are watching out for vehicles on the side of the road,” Hamilton said.  

Hamilton said when you see vehicles on the side of the road, move over into the other lane and give them some space. He explained that somebody may need to get out of the car to check on their vehicle and drivers need to look out for that.

If you have to pull over on the side of the road, make sure to put your hazard lights on and proceed with extreme caution, Hamilton said.
