PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Employees and riders taking TriMet or C-TRAN can choose whether to wear a mask or not starting Tuesday.

TriMet made the announcement late Tuesday morning saying the mask requirement would be lifted on both trains and buses due to a change in federal law.

This comes a day after the transportation department said it would wait for the Department of Justice’s ruling on public transit masking.

“We’re immediately working on taking down ‘mask required’ announcements and signs, but it’ll take several days for us to remove everything on board,” TriMet said in a tweet.

C-TRAN also made the announcement via Twitter, saying “We strongly encourage individuals to make the best decision that supports their well-being and personal needs.”

On Monday, a federal judge in Florida voided the Centers for Disease Control and prevent federal transportation mask mandate for travel.

Portland International Airport also announced it would no longer require travelers to wear masks.
