PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The confederated tribes of Grand Ronde has entered into an agreement to buy the old Blue Heron paper mill in Oregon City.

The long-vacant mill sits along the Willamette River and has had many plans for redevelopment over the years. The tribe is going through the due diligence process which will take a few more months to complete.

Cheryl Kennedy, the chairwoman of the Grand Ronde tribe, told KOIN 6 News there is no definite plan for the site right now.

“But we just want to continue our partnerships and collaborations we’ve been working on for many years,” she said.

The site is important to the tribe. The Willamette Falls area was seeded to the tribe by the government in the 1850s until the tribe was terminated in the 1950s. The tribe was restored in 1983 and they’ve been working to purchase this land for years.
