VANCOUVER, Wash. (KOIN) — Police said at least 3 people were shot at the Smith Tower Apartments — a senior living facility — in downtown Vancouver Thursday afternoon.

Just after 4:30 p.m. VPD’s Public Information Officer Kim Kapp confirmed that the suspect had been taken into police custody following extensive negotiations. Kapp also said that 1 of the 3 victims shot had died.

Kapp gave the following update just after 3 p.m.

Velena Jones was outside the Smith Tower Apartments, near the police perimeter. Her update on the lock down situation going into Thursday evening:

KOIN 6 News spoke with one witness who described the scene outside of the downtown apartment tower. She said she saw officers arrive, heavily armed, and immediately start blocking off streets to traffic.

KOIN 6 News reporter Lisa Balick was in downtown Vancouver outside of the Smith Tower Apartments. She spoke with a woman who was in the area at the time police arrived.

Jennifer Dowling was live at the scene in downtown Vancouver. She reported at someone from law enforcement’s negotiation team was in contact with the suspect who has barricaded himself inside.

KOIN 6 Preliminary Coverage: Multiple people were hurt in a shooting at a downtown Vancouver senior living facility Thursday afternoon. Vancouver police said the suspect was a resident of the Smith Tower Apartments.
