PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A man was killed and one police officer was wounded after shots were fired Thursday morning in Salem, according to police.
A patrol officer was working on a traffic investigation when a vehicle crashed at 17th and Court Street NE just before 10 a.m., Salem police said. The driver of the vehicle ran from the scene. The officer followed on foot and confronted the driver in a residential backyard on Court Street NE.
Police said shots were fired and the officer was struck in the ankle while the man was shot and killed at the scene. On Friday, police identified the man as 30-year-old Rodolfo “Rudy” Martinez-Cortez of Salem.
The officer, Andrew Parsons, has been placed on standard administrative leave pending an investigation. Parsons joined Salem PD in February 2020 after being a deputy with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.
Oregon State Police has been tapped to lead the investigation.
