PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A man died after being struck by a train in Salem early Tuesday morning, officials said.

Just after 6 a.m., Salem Police Department said first responders were called to the scene, at SE 14th and Hine, after the reported crash.

According to Salem police, the preliminary investigation shows the man was walking northbound along the tracks as the train approached. Police said the rail crew sounded the horn and tried to stop the train but could not stop.

Officials said the man died on the scene.
