PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Two people are in custody after an hours-long standoff following a late Monday morning home invasion in the Forest Park neighborhood.
Michael Mazzi, who had 5 outstanding warrants in Clackamas County, and Kerina Trabue — who had an outstanding warrant in Oregon City — were taken into custody after about 7 hours, police said.
Around 11:30 a.m., a husband and wife called 911 to report 2 people broke into their home in the 7000 block of NW Skyline Boulevard and forced them to leave. The pair, unknown to the homeowners, remained inside, police said.
“We could hear over 911 apparently that there was an argument going on and apparently the two people who came inside the house were insisting that the husband and wife get out of the house,” said Lt. Nathan Sheppard with the Portland Police Bureau. “Obviously they were afraid for their safety and they left their house and we showed up.”
Both the Special Emergency Reaction Team and the Crisis Negotiaton Team went to the area to try and get the suspects out of the house.
“We’re going to take as long as we need to take for everyone to be safe and to resolve this safely,” Sheppard said.
At 5 p.m. it remained a very active scene. Flash bangs were used and loud hails were urging the people inside to come out with their hands up.
SERT used robots from the Explosive Disposal Unit to contact the suspects but they ignored efforts to communicate, police said. Eventually a SERT unit went and arrested the man and woman. Then the house was searched further to make sure no other intruders were inside.
By 7 p.m. the pair was in custody. Mazzi and Trabue, each 33, both were booked on charges of first-degree burglary and coercion.
The couple whose home was broken into spoke off-camera with KOIN 6 News. They don’t know the couple that broke in and said it was a scary situation, but they’re grateful to be back home and thankful to the police for resolving things peacefully.
No one was hurt.
