PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — She was known as “One tough mother,” and Gert Boyle really lived up to that moniker on the night of November 10, 2010.

As Boyle was arriving at her West Linn home around 7 p.m., a man approached her, and according to Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office investigators, asked her to sign a gift basket for him.

When Boyle refused, investigators say the man attacked Boyle, pushed her into the wall and her car several times before he forced her inside where he tied her up and robbed her.

While she was being forced inside, the attacker told Boyle to disable her home security system. Instead, she managed to type in a code that notified authorities of the emergency.

Her attacker fled as deputies were responding to the scene.

Several hours later, a suspect, Nestor Gabriel Caballero was tracked down and arrested.

Caballero was eventually identified as the ring leader in a plot to kidnap Boyle and hold her for ransom. He pleaded guilty in April 2011.

Two co-conspirators were also arrested, and eventually convicted and sentenced for their role in the plot.
