PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — One person was killed and five others were wounded when gunfire erupted during a protest at Normandale Park in Northeast Portland on Saturday evening.

The shooting happened around 8 p.m., which was around the same time a march protesting the shooting death of Amir Locke, a Black man shot and killed by Minneapolis police, was slated to happen, according to social media announcements.

On the scene, police found one female had died. Authorities have not released the victim’s identity at this time.

Other shooting victims, identified only as two men and three women by police, were taken to local hospitals. Their conditions are currently unknown.

A KOIN 6 News crew on the scene observed several people yelling at police at the scene that one of their friends was killed in the shooting and they were upset the deceased person’s body may have still been at the scene.

Authorities closed a number of streets in the area, including Northeast Hassalo Street from Northeast 57th Avenue to Northeast 55th Avenue and Northeast 55th Avenue is closed from Northeast Hassalo Street to Northeast Halsey Street.

During a Sunday press conference Portland police held on this and another officer-involved shooting Saturday night that left one person dead, apparent protesters at the scene interrupted the conference and it was canceled as a result.

Lt. Nathan Sheppard with the Portland Police Bureau spoke for two minutes at the Sunday morning press conference before protesters interrupted and took control of the platform.

Protesters followed Sheppard as he walked to a car and drove away.

Among other claims, protesters focused on PPB’s response to the shooting that took place Saturday night during a protest for Amir Locke in Portland’s Normandale Park. They alleged police arrested a medic providing aid to someone who had been shot.

This is a developing story. KOIN 6 News will update this coverage throughout the day.
