PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The Portland Police Bureau identified both the man and officer involved in Friday’s deadly shooting at Lents Park in Portland on Saturday.

Robert Douglas Delgado, 46, died on Friday from a single gunshot wound after PPB officer Zachary Delong shot him.

Delong is an 8-year veteran, was placed on administrative leave during the investigation.

PPB officials said East Precinct officers responded to a call at Lents Park Friday morning about a white man pointing a gun.

Deputy Police Chief Chris Davis said officers arrived and “contacted” the person.

“At some point during this interaction both less lethal and lethal force were deployed,” Davis said.

Delgado died at the scene. No officers were injured in the incident.

It is unclear if Delgado was pointing a gun when he was shot.

A GoFundMe was set up Saturday to help fund Delgado’s funeral expenses.

There was also a call for a welfare check earlier that morning regarding a white man with no shirt in traffic trying to hit passing cars. This call did not involve Delgado, police said.

Officers later worked with paramedics to get the 32-year-old man into an ambulance and transported to a hospital for treatment of a possible drug overdose. Police said he was uninjured and not charged with a crime.

A crowd gathered at Lents Park following the shooting later that afternoon. Davis said some of them tried to tear down crime tape from the scene and that nearly every police officer in Multnomah County was called to the scene in response.

Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt said in an emailed statement Saturday that the DA is in the early stages of a “rigorous and professional criminal investigation,” regarding the Delgado’s death.

There was an “autonomous demonstration” in downtown Portland Friday night in response to the deadly shooting. Portland Police arrested three people during the protest-turned riot.
