PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — One man and one dog were found dead after a one-alarm fire at a duplex in Hillsboro Tuesday morning, according to officials.

Hillsboro Fire & Rescue said crews responded to the multi-story duplex on Southeast 28th Avenue, off East Main Street, just before 8:40 a.m. after several 911 callers reported smoke alarms sounding and darkening smoke billowing from the building.

Neighbors tried to contact the resident at the side of the complex where the fire was more prominent, Hillsboro Fire & Rescue said.

Fire officials said they upgraded the fire to a first alarm to bring additional firefighters and resources to the scene based on information provided by the 911 callers.

On the scene, firefighters knocked down the fire and ventilated the structure to release smoke. Inside one of the units, Hillsboro Fire & Rescue said they found one man and a dog had died.
