PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Authorities spent nearly seven hours Wednesday night negotiating with a man who was on the rooftop of a three-story condominium in Portland’s Sylvan neighborhood.

At around 4:32 p.m., the Washington County Sheriff’s Office said they were called to the Sylvan Heights Condominiums on SW Barnes Road. Deputies reportedly tried to contact 36-year-old Eric Lane, who had a felony warrant out for his arrest, but he climbed onto the roof and threatened to kill himself.

Negotiators tried to communicate with Lane using a loud hail speaker and gave him several phones, but officials said he refused to talk and pointed a handgun at his head. Sometime after this, WCSO said Lane started to talk with negotiators, who spent the next several hours trying to coax the 36-year-old down.

Lane eventually laid his gun down and came down from the roof peacefully at around 11:40 p.m. He was then taken into custody.

He was lodged at the Washington County Jail on his felony warrant related to a parole violation and additional charges. Lane was also wanted by the Salem Police Department for charges related to a domestic violence incident that happened ten days earlier.

Community members in the area were asked to shelter in place during negotiations.
