PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Police have arrested a man in connection with an attempted murder at a nightclub in Hazelwood neighborhood. 

Deon Jefferson remains in the Multnomah County Detention Center. 

The 40-year-old man from Gresham was arrested by Portland police last week and was charged with attempted murder, first-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. 

The shooting was reported on Nov. 29, 2017 at Club Sin Rock, located in the 12000 block of Northeast Glisan Street. 

When police got on scene, they learned that the shooting had actually taken place across the street from the nightclub. Three bullet shell casings were found at the scene. 

The man who had been shot was taken to Kaiser Sunnyside Medical Center by private vehicle moments after the shooting. He was then transported by ambulance to a trauma hospital in Portland. The man is expected to recover from his injuries. 

The victim told detectives that he was not at the club that night. He was called to the club by some of his friends who said that they had been involved in a fight and had been kicked out and needed a ride home. 

When the victim pulled up, one of his friends ran across the street and got into the vehicle. At that same time, another vehicle pulled up and the driver pulled out a gun and fired three times. 

The victim had a conceal-carry permit so he pulled out his gun and tried to fire back but “his arm went dead,” according to court documents. 

The victim told police that neither he nor his friends were gang members. Police spoke with the victim’s friends and one of them said that he was at the bar when someone approached him and asked him “who he banged with.” 

Shortly after that interaction, there was a fight. 

Police were able to identify Jefferson as being the shooter after talking with witnesses, including one person who knew what kind of vehicle he drove and saw the shooting, according to court documents. 

Police learned that on the same day of the shooting, just hours after the shooting, Jefferson sold the vehicle involved in the shooting to a used car dealership, according to court documents. 

Records show police have obtained cell phone data that shows Jefferson’s phone was in the area of the nightclub when the shooting occurred.

Jefferson is due in court on March 23.
