PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN 6) — A grand jury has filed a secret indictment against a 23-year-old man who is accused of being the shooter who killed 24-year-old Andrew Leon Coggins Jr. last summer.
The drive-by shooting happened June 30, 2014 near North Fessenden Street and Fiske Avenue, police said. Marcell Lee Daniel Jr. was initially arrested by Portland Police and members of the Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) on May 22, 2015. He has since remained in custody at the Multnomah County Detention Center.
On Friday, a Multnomah County grand jury charged Daniel Jr. with one count of murder and two counts each of attempted aggravated murder and attempted murder. Prosecutors have had all court documents sealed.
Earlier this month, homicide detectives arrested 20-year-old Juston Neilson Nath. He was charged with one count of criminal conspiracy to commit murder. KOIN 6 News has learned the charge against Nath stem from the fatal shooting of Coggins Jr.
Police have not released details about how either Daniel Jr. or Nath’s are reportedly linked to the shooting or their reported motives. Law enforcement sources confirmed there are gang ties to the killing. Court records show that Nath is a documented Columbia Villa Crip.
Court records show that Daniel Jr. was previously indicted on June 2 after gang officers linked him to a shooting that happened on May 20. In that case, he is charged with one count each of attempted murder with a firearm, attempted first-degree assault with a firearm, attempted second-degree assault with a firearm and two counts unlawful use of a firearm.
In that shooting, gang officers responded to report of a shooting at a residence in the 4300 block of North Willis Boulevard. Investigators learned that the shooting occurred in the area of North Portsmouth Avenue and Bowdoin Street and that the occupants of two moving vehicles were shooting at each other. Police said Robert Lee Bradford, 20, suffered a non-life threatening injury.
Records show that Daniel Jr. lives in the 9400 block of N. Adriatic Avenue.
Nath is scheduled to be in court on Tuesday. He was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on June 1 by homicide detectives. His family then posted bail and he was released from custody on June 2.
