PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — If you look at the FDA’s website — you’ll find 11 different pet food recalls just since the beginning of November 2018.
A Portland business owner decided several years ago that our furry friends deserve better. Kate McCarron started a pet food company so you can “Feed your dog like you feed yourself.”
The Portland Pet Food Company has the feel of a bakery but the shop near the east side of the Willamette River isn’t baking for humans.
McCarron is the top dog at Portland Pet Food, founding it after her old dog Rosie started having health issues.
“I wasn’t ready to give up on her so I started researching,” McCarron said. “Went on the internet, spoke to a couple of nutritionists and started making some formulations of food. Started cooking for her first at home. She started eating and started gaining weight.”
From there, Rosie’s Beef n’ Rice was born, with more food and treats to follow. It’s all cooked at human grade and all of the ingredients are from the United States. The flour is exclusively from Bob’s Red Mill.
Employee Tina Farley started feeding her dog, JR, the food after he started having skin allergy issues.
“He comes running and it’s really made a difference with his coat,” she said. “His coat is super soft now and allergies have cleared up.”
Farley said knowing where the ingredients come from takes away some of the stress the numerous FDA dog food recalls have created.
She said JR is a fan of the popular Brew Biscuits, which also have a special connection to the Northwest.
“We work with the local breweries to repurpose their grain and collect the barley and turn that into scrumptious biscuits with all natural peanut butter, organic pumpkin, beef broth or nitrate free bacon that we get from Carlton Farms,” McCarron said.
Portland Pet Food is sold in many stores and pet stores in our area and along the West Coast. They also ship across the country.
