PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN 6) – Police continue their investigation into a bizarre bar fight and vehicle crash that left one person with life-threatening injuries. However, the suspect who was arrested has been released from prison, and is currently no longer facing any criminal charges.
Police and prosecutors declined Friday to speak to the specifics on the case involving Avery Camacho. However, officials familiar with the incident stressed that the case is not closed – and that it remains an “open” and “on-going investigation.”
He was arrested May 17 after Portland Police got reports of a large fight in the 800 block of North Russell Street. Last month, a police spokesperson said officers were responding to the scene, they learned that a male involved in the fight, later identified as Camacho, left the White Eagle Bar with a female. The two were seen getting into a car and speeding away.
Camacho drove up onto the sidewalk and crashed into a sign post about a block away from the bar.
The female passenger, Krystle Carruthers, got out of the car and Camacho put the car in reverse, running over another person’s foot and striking Carruthers with the open car door. Carruthers was thrown to the ground and suffered significant head trauma.
Camacho reportedly stopped the vehicle and was detained and assaulted by several people who witnessed the earlier incidents.
Camacho was transported to the hospital for serious injuries he suffered during the assault. He was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on charges of second-degree assault, third-degree assault, fourth-degree assault, driving under the influence of intoxicants, and reckless driving.
He was arraigned May 18 and a not guilty plea was entered on his behalf. According to court records, the “order to dismiss” the charges was filed late Thursday.
Records show that had a grand jury issued an indictment in the case, Camacho would have been arraigned Friday morning. A clerk for Multnomah County Circuit Court said that no indictment had been issued “per the stipulation of the parties involved.”
Camacho’s defense attorney was not immediately available for comment.
