PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler tackled a variety of topics at a press conference Monday, including how Portlanders can help the local economy during COVID-19 restrictions.
“There is something everybody in this community can do right now, and that is shop local” Wheeler said. “Amazon has a role to play in the city and Amazon has an important role to play nationally and globally in terms of our economy, but please try our local retailers first.”
Wheeler opened with a few brief remarks before fielded reporters’ questions. He addressed the threatening and racist letters that have been sent to regional social activists and other public figures involved in police reform and racial justice. One of the letters referenced a so-called “kill list,” the mayor said.
“They’re abhorrent,” said Wheeler, referencing the contents of the letters. “They’re not to be tolerated, they’re certainly don’t comport with the values of this community and they don’t comport with the values of basic civility and decency.”
