PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — One man is dead and another person is injured after a deadly crash on Highway 26 near Gresham Monday morning.

The crash happened around 6:30 a.m. A man driving an SUV was turning left onto Hillyard Road from eastbound Highway 26 but was broadsided by an oncoming Jeep.

The Jeep rolled over the SUV and landed on its side. The driver of the SUV — identified as 61-year-old Anthony Ortiz of Portland — died instantly, police said.

“We have a lot of these flashing yellows in Gresham and in Portland and the problem is people aren’t prepared for necessarily how fast a vehicle is coming at them,” said Sgt. Thomas Walker with Gresham PD. “I think that’s what happened in this case.”

The Jeep driver suffered minor injuries and was cooperating with investigators. Investigators said there was no sign of impairment and no citations or arrests were issued.

The investigation was ongoing.
