PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Two people were hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after a head-on crash potentially caused by a third vehicle that left the scene Wednesday afternoon in Northeast Portland, police said.

The crash happened at about 4:30 p.m. on NE Glisan Street near NE 114th Avenue. Officers found two vehicles were badly damaged; one car’s engine had been sheared away, the Portland Police Bureau said.

Two men were ejected from one of the cars and were taken to a hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries, police said. The driver of the other car was hospitalized with broken legs.

The PPB Major Crash Team was called to the scene. Investigators believe a third vehicle hit one of the cars and pushed it over the center line where it collided head-on with the car traveling the opposite direction. The suspect vehicle left before police were called. No suspect information has been released but the case is being investigated as an assault.
