PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A driver was arrested and is facing several charges after hitting a pedestrian on Tualatin Valley Highway early Friday morning, resulting in the victim’s death, authorities said.
According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, deputies learned the pedestrian was hit near Southwest 178th Avenue just before 4 a.m. They say the victim was walking in a crosswalk when they were fatally struck.
The pedestrian, who has not been identified, died at the scene.
The driver, identified by authorities as 32-year-old Emanuel Starr, was sent to the hospital with minor injuries after the crash, which police say ended when Starr hit a power pole after hitting the pedestrian.
Investigators say they believe Starr was “impaired and driving at a high rate of speed when the crash happened,” leading to his arrest once he was released from the hospital a few hours later.
The suspect now faces charges including second-degree manslaughter, driving under the influence of intoxicants and reckless driving.
TV Highway was closed for several hours as the scene was investigated and cleared. It has since reopened.
