PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A Portland police patrol car was hit early Sunday morning, sending a driver and two officers to the hospital.

The crash happened at 2:23 am on SE McLoughlin Blvd north of SE Tacoma Street. Officers had responded to the report of an assault a few minutes earlier and were outside of the patrol car when it was hit from behind by a car traveling northbound.

At the time of the crash, both police vehicles’ emergency overhead lights were activated. The impact sent the police car forward, hitting both officers.

The driver, George J. Goines, Jr., 41, and both officers were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Goines is charged with a DUII, reckless driving, and assault in the fourth degree.

Both officers were released from the hospital Sunday afternoon. One was injured in the arm and the other in the leg.
