PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A bus driver for special needs children in the Beaverton School District was arrested Wednesday morning for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor, authorities say.
David L. Moore, 36, was lodged in the Washington County Jail and charged with first-degree rape, four counts of first-degree sodomy, two counts of third-degree sex abuse and using a child in a display of sexually explicit content. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office says that additional charges are anticipated as the investigation continues.
According to WSCO, the victim is known to Moore outside of his employment. No additional information about the victim will be released.
Detectives believe there may be more victims and are asking anyone with additional information to call the sheriff’s office at 503-846-2700.
“There’s a lot of times where people think that the information they have is insignificant and it turns out to be very valuable, so we want to hear from you,” said Sgt. Danny DiPietro with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office. “When these crimes were committed, the person was a juvenile. So due to the fact that this person is a bus driver from the Beaverton School District and primarily drives buses with special needs kids, we’re asking for anybody with any information or if there’s any other victims out there.”
DiPietro says while it can be difficult, the sheriff’s office is asking parents in the area who may have ridden on Moore’s routes to ask their children the tough questions.
“The fact that he was possibly on that bus alone with dozens of children at a time, but also in cases like this it is very common that there is not just one victim,” he said.
According to the Beaverton School District, Moore resigned from his position last month, and although his last day was slated for Jan. 11, they say Moore revised his resignation Wednesday to be effective immediately.
In response to the arrest, the district stated in part that “Moore had passed two separate criminal background checks prior to being hired as a bus driver in August 2022. The district has not received any complaints regarding his performance or conduct on the job.”
When asked about the schools Moore drove for, the district tells told KOIN 6 News they are waiting to release that information until after Thursday, when they plan to contact the families with children on his routes.
