PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Multiple people were shot in Southeast Portland early Sunday night in an incident that brought dozens of police and 5 ambulances to the scene.
The shooting in the area of SE Main and 162nd happened around 6:45 p.m. Police told KOIN 6 News one woman was rushed to a hospital and others were injured, but officials did not confirm how many others were hurt.
It’s not known what the condition is of the woman who was taken to the hospital.
No one is in custody, authorities said, but added there is no immediate danger to the public.
A woman who lives in the neighborhood told KOIN 6 News the police told her and others they had “to move back because there was an active scene and an active shooter. They said that there was a man that was barricaded in the house that he had shot someone. So that’s what the purpose of all of this was.”
The woman, who declined to be interviewed on camera, said shootings are now common in the area.
The heavy police response of at least 32 units included drones and armored police vehicles plus the SERT and Crisis Negotiation Teams. Officials told KOIN 6 News those teams were called in because “they didn’t know where the suspect was.”
“So, because of that and because of the nature of the call the SERT team and the Crisis Negotiation Team responded to assist in the call,” said PPB spokesperson Derek Carmon. “They’re finishing up, there’s a crime scene down the street here, and there is no danger to the community at this time. And at this point that’s all the information I have to share with you.”
By 10 p.m., authorities said they completed the search and cleared the area but said the area is still an active crime scene.
KOIN 6 News will have more information as it develops.
