CLARK COUNTY, Wash. (KOIN) — A man was shot and killed after reportedly assaulting a homeowner in unincorporated Battle Ground on Thursday night.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office says deputies responded to requests for a welfare check of an “unwanted person at a home” near Northeast 176th Avenue and Northeast 202nd Street around 9:45 p.m. Deputies learned the emotionally distraught, unknown man was at the home’s front door and demanding to go inside. He had reportedly already gotten past a locked gate and was trespassing.

Authorities say the homeowner had confronted the man while armed with a shotgun while the rest of the family hid in a back bedroom and called 911. After the man initially tried forcing his way past the homeowner and into the house, the homeowner was able to calm him down enough to have a conversation on the front porch.

The person who called 911 said the man was telling the homeowner to shoot him — and that if he didn’t, the man would “go after” or “hurt” the homeowner’s wife.

After a few more minutes, the man attacked the homeowner. The homeowner then fired a shot off, striking the man. He died at the scene.

CCSO says the homeowner and the other residents have all been cooperating with the authorities. No arrests have been made at this time.

This is an ongoing investigation. The Clark County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit and Tactical Detective Unit are on scene.
