PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Portland police are still investigating a suspicious death in the St. Johns neighborhood after they got called in for a welfare check.

Police told KOIN 6 News when they arrived on the scene a little after 6 a.m., they found a man dead in the street at North Mohawk Avenue and Hendricks Street. Three surrounding blocks have been closed as part of a suspicious death investigation that’s been developing for over 6 hours.

When KOIN 6 crews first arrived, the crime scene was small — crime tape only surrounded the man’s body. But, as police gathered more evidence, they started expanding the crime scene — eventually taping off another street and focusing their attention on a car around the block.

The car had a lot of exterior damage.

At this point, authorities are not releasing the cause of death. The medical examiner came to the scene and picked the body up for an autopsy.

Officers said they don’t believe there to be any threat to the community, but no other details are being released at this time.
