PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The 20-year-old man responsible for the “brutal” murder of a 21-year-old near Portland State University was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Friday.

Diego Tejeda-Manzo was found dead on Nov. 7, 2017 outside the Vue Apartment complex, just feet from the PSU campus.

Officials said the victim was brutally beaten by Nicholas Hannan, his half-brother David Brown and potentially several other people before being shot to death. Brown has been charged with 2nd and 3rd-degree assault. His next court date is in May.

Prior to Friday, Hannan pleaded guilty to 1st-degree manslaughter with a firearm and 2nd-degree assault.

Tejeda-Manzo’s father spoke using a Spanish interpreter during the sentencing. He expressed to Hannan that Tejeda-Manzo was a son, brother, grandson, nephew and father.

The shooting “destroyed” the entire Tejeda-Manzo family.

The siblings of Tejeda-Manzo prepared a letter that was read by the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office:

“We hope the years you get you will think about what you did. Not only did you take away a son or brother but you took away your dad to an innocent three-year-old. The three old now has to live every day without seeing his dad and having him help out as he grows up… You took away someone who was supposed to protect us since he was the oldest and from whom we were still learning every day. Even though you will be behind bars and justice will be served, nothing will ever bring our brother back.”

Bail hearing reveals details of murder

Portland Police Homicide Detective Rico Beniga testified in February 2018 that a group of 3 men violently beat Tejeda-Manzo outside the Vue Apartment, and it appears he was being targeted after a physical altercation with Hannan several weeks earlier.

The feud between Hannan and Tejeda-Manzo began around Oct. 23, 2017 when they had a physical fight. During that fight, Hannan claimed he suffered $12,000 in medical bills from the beating.

Around Halloween, Hannan told someone he wanted revenge against Tejeda-Manzo and made threats about wanting to kill him. Hannan’s brother reportedly made threats towards Tejeda-Manzo on social media.

The night of the shooting

Hannan told police he and Brown sought out Tejeda-Manzo on Nov. 7 and knew he was likely in the area of Portland State University.

Testimony from February 2018 revealed Hannan was likely tipped off to Tejeda-Manzo’s whereabouts. The confrontation between Hannan, Brown and potentially two other people happened near the Subway restaurant.

It was determined that Hannah fired multiple rounds at Tejeda-Manzo. He died at the scene.

Tejeda-Manzo was also armed during the altercation and shot back at Hannon, injuring him.
