PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — One man was killed and another was injured in a Tuesday night shooting in Gresham, police said.
Officers responded to a report of shots fired near NE 188th Avenue and NE Irving Court at about 8:45 p.m. and found one man dead at the scene, according to the Gresham Police Department. That man was later identified as 23-year-old Joshua Cermack of Portland.
They found another male victim with non-life-threatening injuries. That person’s name and age have not been released. The surviving victim underwent surgery on Wednesday, but the victim’s condition is not known.
Police said the shooting was not a random event and the victims knew whoever pulled the trigger. They added that there was no threat to the public and the shooting didn’t appear to be gang-related.
Detectives went door-to-door on Wednesday to gather more information about what happened.
‘Definitely dead’
A neighbor who wanted to remain anonymous told KOIN 6 News they heard arguing and yelling around 8 p.m.
“My husband peeked his head out and saw 2 people in a truck but it didn’t look like anything was going on so we didn’t end up calling the police over it,” they said.
A short time later, the couple heard 4 shots fired in quick succession. Police arrived on the scene and asked them questions about what they heard and saw.
The couple said a pickup truck had been parked nearby for about 20 minutes before officers showed up.
“The man in the driver’s seat was definitely dead when we stepped out just to the front walk here,” said the neighbor. “We could see him and he was already gone and then there was somebody in the passenger seat.”
Other people who live in the neighborhood returned home from New Year’s Eve celebrations to find a crime scene. They were given police escorts to their respective homes.
