PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Two armed suspects — a man and a woman — who fired shots and hit a Portland police car in Northeast Portland early Saturday night remain on the loose.

Around 5:25 p.m. police tried to stop a car at NE 92nd and Halsey because they believed there was a wanted suspect inside. The driver hit the gas instead and tried to outrun police.

“The driver did not comply with the order to pull over and took off at a high rate of speed. Officers were able to get spike strips on the car which deflated the tires,” PPB Sgt. Kevin Allen told KOIN 6 News.

But the car kept going for a while, even on the flat tires, before stopping near NE 104th and Halsey.

“Shots were heard being fired, we believe at the police, by one or both of those suspects,” Allen said. “So then they ran off into the neighborhood.”

He later confirmed a bullet hit the side view mirror on a PPB patrol car.

Authorities said this is an alarming situation.

“Anytime we are dealing with somebody who may be armed, we are going to get our experts in this type of situation,” Allen said. “That’s the Special Emergency Reaction Team and the Crisis Negotiation Team.”

SERT and CNT set up a perimeter from NE 102nd to 108th and from NE Halsey to Glisan.

But around 9:15 p.m. Allen said the search was complete and the suspects remain at large.

Solomon Momoh, who lives nearby, told KOIN 6 News he was shocked when he and his wife returned from a friend’s house to find a massive police response near NE 102nd and Pacific.

“Before we leave there was nothing like this going on,” Momoh said. “We left out peacefully, but when we try to come back the whole area was filled with police presence.”

The entire incident is very troubling, he said.

“I have family and it’s a very tight neighborhood, you know, so it does concern me and I’m sure it concerns everybody else.”

Solomon and his wife left their pregnant daughter home alone when they went to visit a friend. He was worried about her and hope police are successful in their search.

“I’m really happy for the police presence,” he said. “Because somebody is armed, among thousands of people who are unarmed. It’s dangerous. If they catch him I’ll be happy.”

The investigation continues. Authorities have not released the names of the suspects at this time.
