PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A man was killed and a woman wounded in a shooting in Northwest Portland late Friday night.

The shooting at NW 17th and Irving was reported around 11:20 p.m., Portland police said. Officers found both people wounded when they arrived. Paramedics tried to save the man’s life, but he died at the scene.

The woman was taken to a hospital by ambulance. She is expected to recover.

The suspect or suspects fled the scene before police arrived and no arrests have been made, investigators said.

Jordan Sobrino, who works at a hotel near where the shooting took place, said crime in this neighborhood is not common.

“I think it’s a little surprising,” Sobrino told KOIN 6 News. “It’s pretty quiet around here. Realistically, I mean, obviously you’re always gonna hear about the big stuff. But no, not a pretty significant uptick.”

Despite the shooting he said he feels crime has become less of a factor in recent years.

Records kept by KOIN 6 News show this is Portland’s 26th homicide of 2023. Of those, 22 have been from gunfire.

But that number is clearly down from this point last year, when there were 35 homicides.

“I think shootings are bad,” Sobrino said. “It can be a little bit of a concern, but I mean, comparing now to, like, 2019 just immediately before COVID, we’re seeing leisure travel pretty much at what it was just before COVID.”
