ST. HELENS, Ore. (KOIN) — A St. Helens High School teacher is accused of sexually abusing a 17-year-old girl.
Kyle Jared Wroblewski, 44, was arrested Monday, May 1, after the St. Helens Police Department learned about concerning behavior and found probable cause to arrest him.
Police chief Terry Moss said the relationship had been going on for several months and the day he was arrested, Wroblewski was in contact with the juvenile away from the school.
“It’s unusual that someone who is an employee of the school district is having contact away from the school with a young woman on a Monday,” Moss said. “It’s a school day, what’s going on?”
Wroblewski is charged with first-degree official misconduct, 3rd-degree contributing to the sexual delinquency of a minor, 2nd degree sexual abuse and 3rd-degree sexual abuse. He was booked into the Columbia County Jail on $36,500 bail and posted bail right away.
According to a school district spokesperson, Wroblewski teaches social studies. According to the school website, he also coaches varsity football.
He has been placed on leave.
“If I was the mother of that 17-year-old, I would be clawing his eyes out,” Mom Gill Gillbreath said.
Gillbreath was shocked to learn a man who taught her own 2 children was arrested.
“He was always very kind and somewhat soft spoken,” she told KOIN 6 News.
Her daughter, who had Wroblewski as a track coach a few years ago, was less shocked.
“She said that she wasn’t surprised, that she kind of thought that there might be something weird going on with him back then,” Gillbreath said.
Court documents said Wroblewski must stay at least 500 feet away from St. Helens High School and stay away from parks, schools or sporting events involving minor athletes. He is also not allowed to access social media.
“I don’t believe he should be doing this kind of conduct with the kids,” parent Troy Elder said. “They are obviously here to learn not for that purpose.”
St. Helens High School sent the following note to families:
“We want to let you know that one of our staff members, Kyle Wroblewski, has been placed on leave as a result of criminal charges being filed against him Wednesday. Mr. Wroblewski taught social studies at St. Helens High School. The St. Helens School District’s first priority is the safety and well-being of our students and we do not tolerate any behaviors that place our students in danger. He will not be allowed on campus until our inquiry is complete.
No one answered the door for comment at Wroblewski’s address.
“Our concern now that there is more to the story,” Moss said. “Perhaps not with this victim but are there others. We know this person has a long history with the school district.”
