PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A woman is dead and a man is in the hospital after a shooting in Northeast Portland late Wednesday night, officials said.
The Portland Police Bureau responded to the shooting on East Burnside Street and Northeast 148th Avenue at around 11:22 p.m. Once there, responding officers said they found a woman deceased and a male victim nearby.
The man was rushed to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to PPB.
No arrests have yet been made.
A neighbor, who asked not to be identified for his safety, told KOIN 6 News he was in his backyard having a bonfire when he heard the gunshots.
“That’s when we realized it was a gunshot, all of us ran inside indoors in case there was a fire exchange,” the neighbor said.
He said he hopes someone is arrested because they are afraid.
“Our biggest concern is people could be caught in the middle of fire exchange,” he noted.
While KOIN 6 News is working to learn the identity of the woman who was killed, another homicide victim in the area has been identified as Lucian Thibodeaux. Gresham police said he was shot and killed July 1 at the MAX station on East Burnside and Northeast 162nd.
Neighbors near this most recent homicide told KOIN 6 News the sound of gunfire is something they are becoming more accustomed to.
“You don’t expect such a thing to occur in this neighborhood, but there have been two shootings in two weeks or so,” the neighbor said. “Compared to a year ago, shootings have gone up massively.”
