LA GRANDE, Ore. (KOIN) — Eastbound I-84 has reopened east of Pendleton and La Grande following a fatal crash on Wednesday.
The Oregon Department of Transportation says the closure was between Exit 216, seven miles east of Pendleton, and Exit 265 in La Grande, with the crash near milepost 259.
A preliminary investigation showed that a silver Mercedes GLS, traveling east bound, was stopped in the roadway from an earlier crash when a Freightliner hit the side of the car.
Oregon State Police said the Freightliner was coming around a curve and was unable to stop.
The driver of the car, 59-year-old Brian Burton sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead.
The passenger, 62-year-old Helen Burton and the truck driver, 30-year-old Eddi Morales, were uninjured.
The closure lasted around six hours as police investigated the crash.
Tollgate Hwy, OR-204, was also closed to traffic but has since reopened.
Officials said they are investigating if speed and icy roadways were contributing factors to the crash.
