PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — In the event of a major earthquake, Multnomah County leader are working to make sure at least one of Portland’s bridges can withstand a massive quake.

The Earthquake Ready Burnside Bridge Project is hosting an open meeting Monday night to talk about their plans. They’re looking at 4 different options that would create a resilient bridge crossing the Willamette River and will recommend one of them in 2020.

New engineering studies and the impact of potential construction are among the items on the agenda at the meeting, which begins at 5:30 p.m. at Mercy Corps on Southwest Ankeny right off the Burnside Bridge.

Currently, none of Portland’s bridges are strong enough to withstand a major quake.
