PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – The Oregon Health Authority reported 8,760 new and presumptive COVID cases on Wednesday, continuing to inch the state total to nearly a half-million.

The state’s case count has now reached 494,945.

Hospitalizations have also increased across the state with 756 people in the hospital – an increase of 29 people since Tuesday. With 146 COVID patients in adult ICU beds, only five percent of adult ICU hospital beds are available in the state.

The seven-day running average of COVID vaccinations has increased to 15,532 doses per day.

Oregon set a goal to get 1 million more residents their booster shot by the end of January. As of Wednesday, Oregon needs another 676,870 people to get boosted to reach the goal.

KOIN 6 News found out which hospitals in the Portland area are trimming the number of days COVID-positive health care workers must wait before they can get back on the job.

This comes after recent changes to CDC guidance. Just before Christmas, the CDC shortened the recommended isolation time for health care workers who test positive for COVID-19.

It went from 10 days to seven days, as long as workers don’t have symptoms. The goal is to increase much-needed staffing at hospitals nationwide.

KOIN 6 News checked in with Legacy Health about the CDC guidance.

“Safety is our number one priority at Legacy. Like many other health systems, Legacy is making this change to ensure that we have enough physicians and nurses at work when you need us whether that’s to treat you for COVID-19 symptoms, everyday emergencies or preventative care,” Legacy said in a statement.

Providence sent an email to its staff on Wednesday, which says in part that staff shortages cause a greater threat to patient safety than allowing people to return to work wearing appropriate PPE so they can provide needed services.

OHSU also responded to KOIN 6 News, saying employees should not report to work if they have symptoms or have a positive test.
