PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — This summer a group of firefighters is making history and serving as an inspiration to young women everywhere.

For the first time, three positions on a four-person engine at the Eugene-Springfield Fire Department were filled by women.

In July, the majority female crew was on the same apparatus at Station Four in Springfield.

The station shared a photo of Firefighter Nicole Gates, Captain Jean Wodrich and Engineer Shannon Clawson, who have nearly 40 years of experience combined.

The department said the three represent its commitment to hiring people who reflect the community and hope one day these achievements are so commonplace, they’re not newsworthy.

Eugene-Springfield Fire employs 17 women, who also hold titles like Captain, Battalion Chief and Deputy Fire Marshal.
