PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN 6) — Prosecutors have charged a 64-year-old man who they claim sucker punched a corrections deputy.
Donald Hill Daniels remains in the Multnomah County Detention Center. He currently has two cases pending.
Portland Police Officer Craig Lehman was dispatched at 4:55 p.m. on Monday to the 200 block of Northwest 3rd Avenue to help paramedics who asked for police assistance. During that encounter, Daniels attempted to cause physical injury to the officer and subjected the officer to “offensive physical contact,” according to court documents.
Then, on Tuesday, the sheriff’s office opened a separate investigation into Daniels after he was reportedly caught on camera punching and biting two corrections deputies. According to court documents, Daniels was told to follow other inmates to the dressing room to change clothing. When he walked by Corrections Deputy Ben Mortier, Daniels suddenly punched him without warning.
Other deputies responded and Daniels was taken to the floor, court documents state. During that struggle, Corrections Deputy Brad Harrington was bit by Daniels. Both deputies were treated at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) for injuries.
For the incident that happened inside the jail, prosecutors have charged Daniels with two counts of attempted assault of a police officer and two counts of harassment.
Daniels is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday at 8:50 a.m.
