PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Dr. John Walls, the chief meteorologist for KOIN 6 for 12 years, died March 28 after battling Parkinson’s disease. He was 84.

From 1974 through 1986, Dr. John – as he was known to viewers – delivered the weather for KOIN 6 News with good humor. He claimed he became a weatherman in Portland because it was easy to predict the weather here since it only rained twice a year, six months at a time.

He graduated from Butler University in 1951, the same year he married his wife, Alice. He then spent 20 years as a meteorologist in the United States Air Force and lived in various parts of the world and around the US.

He later earned his Ph.D from the University of Nebraska before coming to Portland.

Alice died before he did, but Dr. John Walls is survived by his second wife, Barbara, four children, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
