LONGVIEW, Wash. (KOIN) — Mint Valley Elementary, the same Longview school that used an isolation room for special needs students a few years ago, sent a student home on the bus in a diaper Wednesday after he soiled himself.

The child’s foster parent claims he came home after riding the bus wearing just a backpack, shirt, diaper and no pants. She also said the child has a learning disability.

District policy states children should have an extra set of clothes on hand for these instances. Sandy Catt with Longview Public Schools said the district did not do what it should have in this instance.

“Typical protocol would be that the child would be cleaned up and outfitted with some sort of unisex loaner sweats or something like that,” Catt told KOIN 6 News. “That protocol was not followed, and from a district level we have investigated that.”

What’s not clear is how the decision to send him home in just a diaper was made. The district allegedly communicated with the family, but to what extent remains unclear.

Catt said the district will continue to investigate.

The superintendent is aware of the situation.
