PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A man was killed in an officer-involved-shooting in Amity on Saturday morning after someone reported the person, not known to them, was inside their home.
The man, who wasn’t identified, engaged in gunfire with officers, according to Newberg-Dundee Police, about three blocks away from the original call. Paramedics were called after the shooting, but officers said “there were no signs of life.”
The original 911 call came in at 5:24 in the morning, according to police. The caller said an unknown person, who they suspected was high on drugs or intoxicated, was inside their home. Shortly after, the caller told police the person had left their home.
Seven minutes later, officers said they found the suspect on Rice Lane near Jellison Avenue. A minute later, shots were fired, officers said, though officers didn’t disclose how many shots were fired and who they came from.
The man was later identified as 27-year-old Kelly Kenneth Sutton of Amity.
Carol Hinkley lives at the intersection where the shooting happened. She was in bed when she woke up to two shots. She then said she heard a pause before several more shots rang out.
She and other neighbors walked outside to flashing lights and officers all over the neighborhood. In the street there was a person covered with a tarp.
“After it sinks in a while, it’s like wow — that’s way too close to home,” Hinkley said. “I don’t like that at all.”
Brenton Story also lives in the neighborhood. He said the neighborhood is filled with children. A school and a playground nearby.
“It’s really scary for my kids that live around here,” he said.
The deputies involved — Sgt. Sam Elliott and Deputy Stephanie Sulak — were placed on administrative leave during the investigation, as is protocol.
