GRESHAM, Ore. (KOIN) – A HAZMAT team was needed to clear out an apartment after officers and detectives started  coughing and experiencing burning throats and eyes.

Gresham Police executed a search warrant in the area of 194th Avenue and East Burnside Street last week as part of an ongoing drug investigation.

The officers arrested Amadeo Lupercio-Quezada and Maribel Sebastian-Evangelista.

Lupercio-Quezada told police that the white cloud of smoke that was filling the apartment was chilies and rat poison, according to court documents.

A HAZMAT team from Gresham Fire and Rescue was called out to clear the apartment complex so detectives could start their search.

As detectives dug deeper into the apartment, they also found 400 grams of meth, 313 grams of cocaine, 131 grams of heroin, drug packaging materials, a digital scale, numerous fake IDs, a loaded .380 caliber handgun, and more than $20,000 in cash.

Prosecutors have petitioned a judge to increase bail for both Sebastian-Evangelista and Lupercio-Quezada.

Bail for Lupercio-Quezada is set at $350,000 and bail for Sebastian-Evangelista is set at $250,000.

Both have been charged with numerous felony drug offenses and child neglect because two children reportedly lived at the apartment.
