PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — There is one year left before the new federal REAL ID law goes into effect but Oregonians likely won’t be able to get their REAL ID before October 1, 2020.
The REAL ID Act passed in 2005 required states to create a form of identification that meets federal guidelines to fly. Without the Real ID, flyers will need a passport to board a plane.
The Oregon Department of Vehicles said it’s been working on creating a Real ID, but the computer system required won’t be implemented until July 2020.
That means the DMV will only have three months to produce REAL IDs for anyone who wants to fly. That’s not enough time, so officials are urging people to get ahead of the deadline by starting the process of getting a passport now.
When it’s finally available, the Oregon REAL ID will have a black star on it.
Washington state is already issuing its own REAL ID.
