NEWPORT, Ore. (KOIN) – A senior at Newport High School surrendered to authorities after police say he crashed his vehicle through barricades at the school on Thursday.
Shortly before 1 p.m., the Newport Police Department said Alexis Yanez Gomez, 18, crashed a blue 2000 Daewoo (four-door sedan) through barricades between the Newport High School main and west campuses. He then continued to speed south, nearly hitting several people.
An officer present during the incident ran to his vehicle to chase after Gomez, but he was unsuccessful due to the student’s high rate of speed and debris in the area.
Newport High School entered lockdown while police investigated.
Around 2:30 p.m., Gomez turned himself in at the Newport Police Department. Afterwards, he was booked into the Lincoln County Jail. He now faces charges of reckless endangering, reckless driving, hit and run vehicle-property and second-degree criminal mischief, police said. His bond was set at $60,000.
The Newport Police Department said impairment was not considered to be a contributing factor to the crash.
