PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Oregon Senate Republicans are calling out Democrats for criticism over their walkout, citing a similar walkout by Democrats in 2001.
The Oregon Senate Republican’s official Twitter account shared a quote from Governor Kate Brown expressing her support for the 2001 walkout.
House Democrats staged a 5-day walkout to prevent a Republican maneuver to redraw state legislative districts without the governor’s signature, the Statesman-Journal reports.
According to an Associated Press article from 2001, Kate Brown, who was the Senate Democratic Leader at the time, called the House Democrats’ actions “very appropriate under the circumstances.”
“Under certain circumstances, it’s fair to say we would use all the tools available to us,” and state a similar boycott, she said.
Brown has instructed Oregon State Police to bring the senators back.
